JACKSONVILLE, North Carolina (WGHP) – Steven Sturdevant of Jacksonville bought a Cash 5 ticket for $1 and won a $100,000 jackpot, according to a press release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Sturdevant, a 63-year-old retired Army sergeant, said he first checked the Cash 5 results from Jan. 28 early Saturday morning and thought the winning numbers looked the same, but then went back to sleep.
“I was half-asleep when I first found out about it, – said Sturdevant. When I woke up later that morning, I had to check again to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.”
Sturdevant, who lives in Half Moon, left the Army as a combat-disabled veteran. He bought a Quick Pick ticket at the Food Lion on Branchwood in Jacksonville.
“I don’t think it really sinks in until I see it in my bank account,” – said Sturdevant.
He claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After mandatory state and federal withholdings, he took home $71,014. He said he wants to fix up his house, buy a new van, and then help some members of his family.
