Hamster-trader – that sounds strange. Especially when you realize it’s about a live hamster that trades cryptocurrency. Nevertheless, such a project does exist. We’ll tell you about it below.
What principle makes a cryptocurrency rate go up or down is a mystery. And sometimes it’s easier to trust chance than try to predict anything. For example, let a regular hamster make decisions for you. Even if he makes a mistake, you’ll earn people’s love if you stream the process on Twitch, Twitter and Reddit.
In fact, even on traditional stock markets there is a large element of randomness. To such an extent that economists seriously consider a monkey picking stocks at random a viable option. So why not let a hamster try trading crypto? It’s even ironic, because it plays on a slang term. (“Hamster” or “hamsterka”, “lemming” – a user who knows nothing about economics and finance but dreams of striking it rich on cryptocurrency).
The hamster Mr. Goxx (Mr. Goxx) trades cryptocurrency right from his hamster cage. He’s a very businesslike animal; he has his own mini-office with a “wheel of intent” he can run on to choose a currency to trade. The office also has two tunnels by which Mr. Goxx signals his desire to buy or sell the currency chosen by the wheel.
The wheel contains an optical encoder sensor connected to an Arduino Nano hardware platform. The Nano detects the hamster’s presence in one of the tunnels, after which the corresponding “buy” or “sell” LED lights up. That means the hamster is ready to make a trade. The Nano also interacts with a complex Java program that handles the live video stream and executes real trades with real money.
Real-time updates are sent to Twitter and Reddit. It looks something like this:
There is also a live stream on Twitch [Mr Goxx]. The stream shows only the hamster’s office, not his whole dwelling. Mr. Goxx is mostly active at night (Berlin time).
For now it’s more of a funny show, but it will be interesting to observe the hamster’s long-term results.
