The Australian betting platform BetEasy was fined $50k for breaching gambling licensing rules. The company re-registered a player who had been banned from gambling access, and who lost $720k. It was reported that the problematic user’s name had been added to the list of players who had self-excluded from gambling.
Despite this, BetEasy allowed the registration of another account for that user and let him lose about $720k. The Australian Gambling Commission stated that the bookmaker breached at least two license conditions and failed to take measures to identify problem gamblers.
It is also known that the player who re-registered had been a customer of CrownBet, which later became an affiliate of BetEasy. Besides the fact that betting company staff contacted the player in 2019 and helped him register a new account in his wife’s name, they also offered him free bets, which violates responsible gambling principles.
As a result, the player and his wife tried to recover $719,350 lost to BetEasy. It is known that the company and its customer reached a “private dispute settlement” in April 2021. Later the Commission fined the bookmaker.
