Men arrested over a £4 million jackpot

Two men who bought a National Lottery scratch card using stolen debit card details and then tried to claim a £4 million jackpot, as they showed, have been jailed.

John Watson from Bolton and Mark Goodram travelled to London to beg in 2019 and bought the winning card in Clapham. They were caught when claiming the prize because it emerged they did not have a bank account, despite using a debit card to buy the ticket. Pleading guilty to fraud at Bolton Crown Court, they were both jailed for 18 months. The court heard that the men, aged 34 and 38, flew from Bolton to London on 22 April 2019.

‘A sense of injustice’

Denise Fitzpatrick, the defendant, said the pair, who had both been licensed after previous prison sentences, had the debit card details belonging to a person they did not know. She said that Goodram had the card number and expiry date written on his hand, and he used them to buy £90 worth of goods at the Londis shop on Clapham High Street and £71 of goods, including five scratch cards, at the Waitrose on Clapham Common.

The court was told that one card had a £10 prize, which was claimed at the Londis shop, and the other – the jackpot.

According to Fitzpatrick, Watson phoned the National Lottery and said his friend had won before Goodram told the operator he would share the prize with his friend. He was told the payment would be made by bank transfer.

“Mark Goodram explained that he did not have a bank account, [but] the purchase of the winning scratch card was made by a debit card from a bank account … which immediately aroused suspicion,” she said.

The court was also told Goodram had no fixed address, and Watson of Nuttall Avenue, Little Lever, contacted the media when the prize was not paid.

Sentencing them, recorder Sarah Johnston said the pair, who had numerous previous convictions, had deprived the next customer of the chance to win a “life-changing amount of money” before having the “brazen cheek to proclaim their sense of injustice in the national newspapers”.

“You must have thought all your Christmases had come at once,” she said. “Despite knowing that you obtained those prize monies by deception, you tried to claim them. I have no doubt that you will both continue to offend dishonestly in the future.”
