The Epiphany bathing in an ice hole on the Oredezh River near Gatchina ended with the death of a 40-year-old woman in front of her two children: the underwater current was so strong that under the ice the mother was swept away in an unknown direction. Divers who arrived at the scene in the morning dived into the river three times, but they still did not find the body. Since the ice hole was not equipped, locals assume the woman was carried away by the current.

To bring some positivity into this rather gloomy thread about Epiphany, I’ll tell the following story. When I was dousing myself with cold water and bathing in the ice hole, I had a good buddy, Volodya Kokhanov, he was a very open, cheerful and Nature-tempered man. And once, on Epiphany Sunday, people from the local TV came to us to shoot a piece about winter hardening. At that time it was a rarity…  

People dove into the ice hole on the river, the camera “was watching” people’s immersion into the hole and their joyful resurfacing… Everything was kind of monotonous, warm and joyful… And then, to add some intrigue, Volodya dove into the ice hole, and all the film crew, as usual, kept the camera on him, they waited, you know, waited…, waited a long time… Until they really started to “get nervous” and then he had to lie down on the ice and shout, “Volodya, don’t fool around, surface now!” And when they saw him in perfect health, they had to “warm up” those nervous film folks with kind words… Too bad, of course, that they never came back to us since then.) That’s what happened)
