According to a report by the Italian gaming company Lottomatica, during the COVID-19 pandemic the illegal gambling market in Italy grew by more than 50%.
The authors of the report indicated that by the end of 2021 the volume of the illegal gambling market in Italy could grow to $20 billion. And in the period from January 2020 to April 2021 underground gambling establishments in the country were found every three days.
According to a survey by the parliamentary commission investigating illegal gambling, 83.6% of respondents believe that the government should take responsibility for regulating and managing the gambling market, guaranteeing protection for users and society.
59.8% of survey participants stated that aggressive sanctions against legal gambling companies will lead to an increase in the number of people who use the services of unlicensed gambling operators. 28.9% of respondents believe that a complete ban on gambling would reduce the number of players and benefit public health.
According to the Lottomatica report, during the COVID-19 pandemic the total revenue of legal gambling establishments in Italy fell by $22.2 billion euros, players’ winnings decreased by $15.7 billion euros, and tax revenues for regulators fell by $4.1 billion euros.
Land-based venues suffered the most – their revenue decreased by $35 billion euros.
Recall that according to a recent report, Australians’ spending on gambling during the COVID-19 pandemic increased by 300%.
Experts suggested that due to the closure of land-based casinos, clubs and bars, people began placing bets online more often.
