In Massachusetts (USA) men who “won” the lottery more than 14 thousand times were jailed for lottery fraud, money laundering and tax evasion.
According to law enforcement, the men bought winning lottery tickets at a discount with cash from other players across Massachusetts, and they also worked with the owners of convenience stores to facilitate those operations.
In some states authorities withhold federal tax or child support that lottery winners owe from winnings above a certain threshold; in Massachusetts that threshold is $600.
“This case, by its nature, is a deliberate tax fraud. For a decade this father-and-son team deceived the lottery commission and the tax authority,” said acting US Attorney Joshua Levy.
