The Dutch parliament is preparing a ban on gambling advertising. A few months ago they legalized online gambling.
After the legalization of online gambling, the amount of advertising for gambling brands on Dutch TV, the internet and other platforms has increased significantly. Preliminary estimates show that during this time online traffic to gambling companies has grown by more than 50%. In response, authorities have decided to introduce stricter regulations for the gambling industry and its advertising. It is expected that the Dutch parliament will soon propose a ban on gambling company ads on TV before 21:00 and the use of people under 25 years old in advertising materials.
The demand to ban “untargeted high-risk gambling advertising” was submitted by members of the Socialist Party and the Christian Democratic Appeal.
Officials said that the growing popularity of gambling sites could lead to “serious social consequences, such as financial problems and addiction issues”.
